Oh, definitely! I recently wrote a 100 word story and folks in my workshop said it could be expanded and tell more. I added a bunch and don’t like it as much as the original so going back to that and just fine tuning it.
A lit mag rejected a story of mine recently, saying that they “loved the opening paragraph, but as the story went on it felt like it was a part of something bigger, with a longer character arc.” Basically, great story, make it longer. That shows me they didn’t get what I was trying to do at all.
I love that! I’m a big fan of flash fiction, both writing and reading it. The word count constraint often leads to some of the most imaginative, most poetic short stories in existence.
